OES Top Twenty Event

Gr. CH Shagshadow’s Sweet Emma

Winner of 2011 Old English Sheepdog Top Twenty Event

Each year the top twenty ranked sheepdogs in the country are invited to participate in a formal confirmation event held the evening before the OESCA National Championship show. The event format is unique to the Top Twenty. Each dog is featured and judged individually by three judges. Each judge assesses how closely the dog meets the breed standard and then completes a score sheet grading 13 individual characteristics. Judge’s scores are compiled and an average score is determined for each dog. The highest scoring dog is then selected as the winner of the Top Twenty.

For 2011 the judges for the Top Twenty event were Heike Bilsheim from Germany, Michaelanne Johnson from the United States, and Pam Tomes from England.

Although the event was held on Tuesday evening, the winner is always announced two days later at the OESCA National awards banquet. The event winner is identified when Linda Jordan, the Top Twenty co-chair and event coordinator, holds up the arm band number for the winning dog. It was an unbelievable feeling to see her holding number 54 indicating our Sweet Emma was the Top Twenty winner. It is a thrilling but also humbling experience to win this event while competing against the top sheepdogs in the country. In 1998 we won our first Top Twenty with Drew Bear , Ch. Raffles Reprise. Since then we have competed in the Top Twenty with Baby Joe and Piper, two more outstanding sheepdogs. It is especially rewarding that 13 years after Drew Bear’s victory her great grand daughter duplicated her feat by winning the 2011 Top Twenty.

We would like to thank the Old English Sheepdog Top Twenty show committee and the judges for this wonderful competition.

This beautiful compact bitch is what we hoped to produce when we bred Tatum (Ch. Shagshadow’s Sweet Secret) and Tucker (Ch. Shagshadow’s Pandamonium). She has outstanding structure and movement and a wonderful sweet temperament. Although she has only been shown on a limited basis she completed her class bitch show career with all major wins including Best of Winners at the 2010 New England Specialty and Best of Winners at the 2010 OESCA National Specialty. She then went on to win her Grand Championship and qualified for the top 20 in only a handful of shows.

We would like to thank our friend, co-owner, and co-breeder Pat Schneider for this great dog. We would also like to thank our friends and mentors, Jane and Bob Ogg for providing Tucker as stud dog to produce such an outstanding litter. Emma lives at home with us where she loves to play every day with all of our sheepdogs including her grandfather Ch. Shagshadow’s Sweet Baby Joe.

Drew Bear 1998 Top Twenty Winner

Am. and Can. CH Raffles Reprise

Winner of 1998 Old English Sheepdog Top Twenty Event

We still remember the day we got this beautiful little girl from Toni Lett. One look into those dark brown eyes and we were hooked for life. Little did we know that Drew would embark on a show career that included multiple best in show wins, number one OES in Canada, Best of Opposite Sex at the 1998 USA National Specialty, and overall winner of the 1998 Top 20 Competition. Drew’s type and temperament were outstanding but it was her fluid movement that placed her at the top of the breed. She was poetry in motion.

Drew will be with us always in our hearts and minds and in the lives of the beautiful puppies she has produced. We are honored to have a Drew great granddaughter, Ch. Shagshadows Sweet Emma win the 2011 Top Twenty showing the same beautiful movement as her Great Grandmother.

Am. and Can. CH Sagshadow’s Best Kept Secret

Competitor at the 2005 OES Top Twenty Event

This beautiful girl is a strong, sturdy bitch with the type and movement that sets her apart. Her fluid gate brings back our memory of Drew with every stride. Shown on a limited basis in 2005, Piper was a natural in the show ring and surged into the top 10 in both breed points and all breed points. She was one of our overall best show dogs with both power and grace and the ability to move effortlessly around the show ring.

Am. and Can. CH Shagshadow’s Sweet Baby Joe

Competitor at the 2006 and 2007 OES Top Twenty Events

Baby Joe was slow to enter the show world as he watched his sisters compete and win in the USA and Canada. He finally made his show debut in the summer of 2005. Initially shown with a relatively short coat he surprised us by quickly winning his Canadian and then American championships.

This big lovable boy continued to surprise us in 2006 as he matured into a strong and solid sheepdog. Shown on a limited basis he finished 2006 as the number 2 Old English in the USA based on breed points. Baby Joe has been in the top 5 Old English for the past 3 years and although he is semi retired in 2008 he continues to be ranked among the top OES. We were especially proud of Baby Joe’s best of breed win at the 2008 New England Old English Sheepdog Club annual specialty show under judge Mrs. Marilyn Mayfield.

Baby Joe has excellent movement and a playful winning attitude that sets him apart. This big lovable boy is a great competitor that just loves to show.
